The Stanley Cup playoff schedule can get a little wonky at the pivot point between Rounds 1 and 2, especially when there are Game 7s involved.
Such is the case in the 2026 tournament. The Tampa Bay Lightning will be hosting the Montreal Canadiens for the final game in their series, a day after the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers began their second-round series, and just ahead of another second-round matchup, Colorado Avalanche-Minnesota Wild.
Scheduling oddities aside, let’s get you ready for two really great hockey games on Sunday.

Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning
Game 7, 6 p.m. ET (TNT) | Series tied 3-3
The Canadiens have an all-time record of 15-9 in Game 7s, including a 7-6 record on the road. The Lightning are 7-3 in Game 7s in their history, including a 4-1 mark at home.

Andrei Vasilevskiy was the story for the Lightning, making 30 saves to record the eighth playoff shutout of his career (most among active goalies) and the second shutout of his career in a potential elimination game.
There are a lot of high-profile stars on the Lightning, but it was Gage Goncalves who notched the game-winner in OT in Game 6. It was just his second career playoff goal, and first OT game-winner.
Jakub Dobes made 32 saves in defeat; had the Canadiens scored to win the game in OT, he would have become the first Canadiens goalie to record a shutout in a series-clinching game since Carey Price in the 2008 conference quarterfinals.
Since a hat trick — and seven shots on goal — in Game 1, Juraj Slafkovsky has been held without a goal or an assist in the ensuing five games, with just 10 total shots on goal.

Minnesota Wild at Colorado Avalanche
Game 1, 9 p.m. (TNT)
The Wild’s series win over the Dallas Stars was their first as a franchise since 2015, snapping a streak of nine straight series losses.
Colorado completed a sweep of the Los Angeles Kings in Round 1, the sixth in franchise history — all of which have occurred since the team moved from Quebec prior to the 1995-96 campaign.

In the four-game regular-season series, each team had one regulation win and one shootout win. For the casual fans just tuning in, a reminder that there are no shootouts in the postseason.
Nathan MacKinnon enters this series with 57 career playoff goals, one shy of tying Peter Forsberg for second on the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise list. Joe Sakic is the leader, with 84.
Two of the four defensemen in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history with 10 or more playoff goals for the club are Cale Makar and Devon Toews, the current top pairing.
The Wild have a pretty good D corps too. With two goals and an assist in the Wild’s Game 6 win, Quinn Hughes became the second defenseman in the last 30 years with two goals and an assist in a series-clinching win, joining Nicklas Lidstrom in Game 7 of the 2010 conference quarterfinals.
Teammate Matt Boldy has shone brightly on the big stage this year. He scored the opening goal of the Olympic gold medal game (won by Boldy and Team USA), and he authored three multi-point games in Round 1 to lead Minnesota to the series win, including two empty-net goals in Game 6.

Sunday’s best bet
The bet: Cole Caufield anytime goalscorer (+165)
Goodness knows he’s due. If it wasn’t for an outstanding performance from Andrei Vasilevskiy, the league’s second-leading regular-season goal scorer might very well have found the back of the net on one of his four quality shots in Game 6.
As effective as the Lightning have been at stifling Montreal’s top line, another round of four shots — and oddsmakers favor at least three — on Tampa Bay’s tender could very conceivably net Caufield his second goal of this seven-game set. — Victoria Matiash
Saturday’s scoreboard
Philadelphia Flyers at Carolina Hurricanes
Hurricanes lead 1-0
As has been the case for the entire postseason, this Hurricanes game became “The Logan Stankoven Show.” The center scored the first goal of the game (again) at 1:31 of the first period, before his linemate Jackson Blake made it 2-0 six minutes later. One more tally from Stankoven in the second made it 3-0, and Frederik Andersen didn’t even need that much support, stopping all 19 shots on goal he faced.
The third period included some physical tone-setting by both teams given the lopsided score, and after the game Flyers coach Rick Tocchet reported his team wasn’t “mentally prepared” for the game. That clearly needs to change before Monday’s Game 2 back in Raleigh, or else this is going to be another short series for Carolina. Full recap.
