Aaron Rai’s first career major victory at the PGA Championship on Sunday will go down as one of the biggest long-shot wins in golf betting history.
DraftKings Sportsbook unveiled it had Rai at 290-1 to win the Wanamaker Trophy on Thursday morning just before the tournament at Aronimink Golf Club began. It also took a $288 wager at 230-1 that paid out $66,240.
At those odds, according to ESPN Research, Rai is the biggest long shot to win a major in at least the past 20 years, surpassing Phil Mickelson at the 2021 PGA Championship and Louis Oosthuizen at the 2010 Open Championship. They were both 200-1.

Odds vary across the sportsbook marketplace, as BetMGM closed Rai at 150-1 and the Westgate in Las Vegas had 200-1. Caesars Sportsbook stated that one of its patrons in New York bet $190 on Rai at 200-1 odds that cashed for $38,000.
Rai was 18-1 to win the championship entering Sunday and was as long as 44-1 during the final round, according to DraftKings odds.
The betting public was largely not behind Rai, as he took just 0.1% of the tickets before the tournament and reached only 0.6% by the end of the third round, per BetMGM. That means sportsbooks probably did very well in this tournament despite having to pay out a few big winners.
Scottie Scheffler (tied for 14th) came into the tournament as the +385 favorite and as usual was a popular play with the betting public. Cameron Young (T-26) was one of the largest liabilities across the sportsbook marketplace, and Matt Fitzpatrick (T-14), Jordan Spieth (T-18) and Rickie Fowler (T-60) were also cautions for sportsbooks because of their popularity.
