May 28: Thursday morning’s news to know
By Todd Zola
There are only six games on today’s ledger, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET at Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels are playing the rubber game of their three-game set. Two more matinees follow, along with three evening affairs.
-
The Tigers will likely be without closer Kenley Jansen, perhaps for an extended period of time, as he exited yesterday’s game due to an apparent groin issue. He’s dealt with the same injury already this season and, although he has avoided the IL thus far, this time around he may not be as fortunate. The veteran has 483 career saves, the third-most ever, just 17 shy of 500. The only two relievers with more career saves are Mariano Rivera (652) and Trevor Hoffman (601). Will Vest will likely lead a committee if Jansen misses action.
-
Casey Mize also left last night’s game early as a result of a tight right groin. He managed to toss four innings, but instead of taking the hill for the fifth, he headed to the clubhouse with the Tigers’ trainer. His status is pending evaluation. If Mize is sidelined, Drew Anderson will likely pitch on Sunday, either as a traditional starter or bulk reliever. The club is hoping to make due until the eventual returns of Tarik Skubal and Justin Verlander.
-
The Angels placed Nolan Schanuel on the 10-day IL due to an ankle injury. Vaughn Grissom will likely move across the diamond to cover first base, with Donovan Walton and Nick Madrigal as options to man the hot corner.
-
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returned to the Toronto Blue Jays lineup Wednesday. He had missed the previous two contests thanks to a sore elbow after being hit by a pitch on Sunday. Guerrero went 2-for-3 with a walk in the Blue Jays’ 2-1 win over the Miami Marlins. Guerrero has been in a rut this month, batting just .205/.330/.304. He’s fanning at a low 9.9% clip, but his exit velocity and hard-hit rate are well below his usual level.
-
Teoscar Hernandez left last night’s game after seeming to hurt his hamstring while hustling to first base in the second inning. He was replaced in the top of the third by Hyeseong Kim, though Alex Call would probably see most of the action in left field if Hernandez is sidelined for an extended period of time. Call was already in the game last night, with the Los Angeles Dodgers giving Kyle Tucker the night off in their 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
-
Earlier in the day, the Dodgers returned Enrique Hernandez to the 10-day IL due to a left oblique strain. He had made his 2026 debut only three days ago following offseason elbow surgery and is now facing another extended absence. Alex Freeland was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill the open roster spot.

May 27: Wednesday’s news to know
Josh Jung’s return to the Rangers lineup on Tuesday helped the offense get back on track. APBy Todd ZolaAfternoon baseball returns with the Toronto Blue Jays welcoming the Miami Marlins to the Rogers Centre at 1:07 p.m. ET for the rubber game of a three-game interleague series. Five more matinees follow, with nine evening affairs closing out the slate.
-
After missing two games, Josh Jung was back on the field last night for the Texas Rangers, playing third base and batting cleanup. He left last Saturday’s game early due to a sore left shoulder. Jung went 1-for-3 in the Rangers’ 10-7 win over the Houston Astros.
-
The Chicago White Sox have called up David Sandlin to start tonight’s AL Central matchup against the Minnesota Twins. The spot opened after the club placed Noah Schultz on the 15-day IL as a result of a knee issue. Sandlin was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the offseason but was dealing with a sore elbow in the spring, so he’s only made six appearances for his new organization. The 25-year-old right-hander logged 12 innings with Triple-A Charlotte, fanning 17 while allowing just one earned run. His longest stint has been four innings, so he may not be stretched out enough to go deep into the game.
-
Vladimir Guerrero Jr.‘s status for Toronto is unclear after missing his second consecutive game last night. The slugger was hit in the elbow by a pitch on Sunday. Guerrero was able to take swings yesterday, so the club is hopeful he can return today. Lenyn Sosa has been filling in at first base.
-
The Los Angeles Angels were without 1B Nolan Schanuel for the second straight game as he’s nursing lingering left calf tightness. Vaughn Grissom has been filling in and would be the top option to continue manning first base if Schanuel remains out for today’s road date with the Detroit Tigers.
