Through three games, the 2026 Stanley Cup Final has been one for the ages. The Vegas Golden Knights won 5-4 in Game 1, the Carolina Hurricanes won 4-3 in overtime in Game 2, and the Knights took Game 3 5-4 in double overtime, including two all-time Cup Final records:

And oh yeah, Vegas defenseman Brayden McNabb returned to play two nights after taking an 87 mph slap shot to the nose, requiring “20-30 stitches,” as he told the media.

Will the next showdown top what has transpired thus far? Here’s a rundown of key intel and trends heading into the contest courtesy of ESPN Research, as well as updated postseason stats leaders.

Tuesday’s schedule

Carolina Hurricanes at Vegas Golden Knights
Game 4, 8 p.m. ET (ABC) | VGK leads 2-1

Teams leading a best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final 2-1 have gone on to win 81% of the time in NHL history, a 46-11 series record, including the past four instances: 2020 Lightning, 2022 Avalanche, 2023 Golden Knights and 2025 Panthers.

The Golden Knights have an 8-2 series record after going up 2-1, while the Hurricanes have a 5-6 series record when trailing 1-2.

  • If the Knights go up 3-1, they are in even better shape; teams that have gone up 3-1 in the Cup Final have a 38-1 series record, with the lone comeback authored by the Maple Leafs in 1942 over the Red Wings.

The 25 combined goals scored through three games by the Canes and Knights is the most through that span of a Cup Final since 1981, when the Islanders-North Stars series had 30 (which is the record).

Will the Hurricanes go with Brandon Bussi in net for Game 4? Frederik Andersen had started and finished every game for Carolina this postseason until he was pulled after two periods in Game 3. It was Bussi’s first action since April 14, and he stopped 18 of 19 shots in the loss — including a penalty shot.

Taylor Hall has 17 points this postseason to lead the Canes, 15 of which are at even strength. Those 15 are tied for the Whalers/Hurricanes franchise record for a single postseason with Corey Stillman (2006).

Linemate Logan Stankoven has 10 goals in the playoffs, which is tied with Eric Staal (2009) for second most in a single postseason behind current head coach Rod Brind’Amour’s 12 in 2006.

Game 3 was Marner’s eighth multipoint game this postseason, which is the most in Golden Knights playoff history. He has 28 points total in the playoffs, which is the most by a player in their first postseason with a new team; the previous record was 27 by Frank Mahovlich in 1971 with the Canadiens.

Cole Smith’s 14 hits in Game 3 were the most by a single player this postseason, and that tally is tied with four other players for third most in a playoff game since hits were first tracked in 2005-06. Only Brenden Morrow (19 for the Stars vs. the Sharks in 2008) and Ville Nieminen (15 for the Oilers vs. the Sharks in 2006) have had more.

Brett Howden is the goal-scoring leader this postseason, with 13 in 18 games, which surpasses his regular-season total of 12 in 58 games. He is the seventh player in NHL history to score more goals in the playoffs than the regular season, joining Claude Lemieux (1986 with MTL, 1995 with NJ, 1997 with COL), Jaden Schwartz (2019 with STL), Marian Gaborik (2014 with LA), Patrick Sharp (2013 with CHI), Sergei Fedorov (1998 with DET) and John Druce (1990 with WSH).

    Best bet for Tuesday

The bet: Nikolaj Ehlers over three shots on goal (+100)

Holding a top-five spot in playoff shot attempts among skaters in the Stanley Cup Final, Ehlers is a leading candidate to pepper the net in a pivotal game for the Hurricanes. Skating on a dynamic line with Jordan Staal and Seth Jarvis, and on the top power-play unit, the winger will be afforded ample opportunity to contribute to the score sheet.

Plus, with two of three contests already stretching into overtime, another set of bonus minutes would offer up additional chances for Ehlers to eclipse this total. — Victoria Matiash

    Saturday’s scoreboard

Vegas Golden Knights 5, Carolina Hurricanes 4 (2OT)
    Knights lead 2-1

After 16 goals were scored over the course of Games 1 and 2, some expected a tight defensive battle in Game 3. The first period was! But then the scoring onslaught began.

Vegas scored two goals that were waved off upon replay review — one for offsides, one for goaltender interference — but they weren’t done yet. Tomas Hertl opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 10:26 of the second, and then the Mitch Marner show began. Marner scored three goals in succession — a natural hat trick — in a Stanley Cup Final-record 6:10 of game time. This led to Rod Brind’Amour replacing Frederik Andersen with Brandon Bussi in goal, and it looked like the Knights would cruise to a win.

But, with Bussi providing stability in the back end with some crucial saves — including on a Marner penalty shot — the Canes roared back. Carolina scored three goals in 39 seconds (another Stanley Cup Final record) off the sticks of Jordan Martinook, Taylor Hall and Jordan Staal.

Vegas tightened up thereafter, but the Canes would not be denied the equalizer, scored by Andrei Svechnikov with just 1:42 remaining. After many scoring chances for each side in the opening OT, it took until 5:38 of the second session for one of the wackiest game-clinching goals in recent memory to be the decider. Shea Theodore sent the puck in around the boards, and it popped out to Martinook. The Canes forward misplayed it, resulting in a bounce off Bussi’s pads and into the net. Elation for the home fans, and dismay for Carolina. Game 4 is Tuesday in Vegas. Full recap | Grades
