Elsewhere, the Berlin Open final between Jessica Pegula and Linda Noskova was delayed by several hours because of a thunderstorm.

Tournament organisers cleared fans out of the stadium because of “severe weather conditions”.

A statement mentioned the public village area of the tournament – where food stalls are – sustained “significant damage as a result of the storm” and would remain closed.

In Bad Homburg in Germany, British number two Katie Boulter suffered a 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-3 defeat by Leylah Fernandez.

Boulter had beaten the Canadian at Queen’s last week but Fernandez saved 19 of the 24 break points she faced to gain revenge in three hours and 14 minutes.
