As the whistle peeped at the impressive Miami Stadium, Scotland players sank to the turf, shook their heads and emanated agony. Here we go again.

In the resulting hours the performance has dictated much of the discourse, leading to the mixed emotions among fans home and away.

The nation is now holding its breath. Just. While they’re doing so, how are they feeling?

‘World class at letting ourselves down’

It appears the general consensus reflects the mood of the players and Clarke, who spoke post match.

Scunnered.

Not at defeat to a Brazil side led by Carlo Ancelotti with Vinicius Junior, Matheus Cunha and the returning hero Neymar, but the manner in which they allowed their South American opponents to slice them open.

The Real Madrid forward had the ball in the net three times in the first half. Mercifully, only two of them stood.

The error-strewn defence were embarrassed three times in total. It easily could have been more, such was the haphazard nature of the Scots’ backline and the liveliness of the Brazilian attack.

Patrick W: Got no problem losing 3-0 to Brazil but we shot ourselves in the foot. Damage done by settling for one goal vs Haiti and the negative set-up vs Morocco.

Chris: Disappointing. Not expecting to be high flying but to play so negatively in all three games is just so, so poor. Gutted the fans never got a goal to cheer.

Glenn: Unfortunately we were useless. Looked like a pub team. Embarrassing.

Robbie: Now a waiting game. Did they let themselves down, yes. Was I surprised, no. It’s what Scotland do, we are world class at it. Perhaps it’s time to reflect again on the abilities, or lack of them within the squad.

Lively debate over Scotland’s level

What is Scotland’s level? Now that generates another debate. As was heard on Sportsound between Kilmarnock manager Neil McCann and BBC Scotland’s chief sportswriter Tom English.

The latter suggested Scotland’s players are “not good enough” to compete at the top table of international football – nine tournament games across the past two Euros and this World Cup without scoring a non-deflected goal would suggest that.

But former Scotland winger McCann contested you can’t “pull the shutters down like that”.

“You’ve got a guy who’s voted the best midfielder in Italy, in Lewis Ferguson. You’ve got a guy who’s up for Ballon d’Or discussions in Scott McTominay. You’ve got the captain of Aston Villa [John McGinn], who has just won the Europa League,” reported McCann.

All that is true, which is where much of the frustration lies among fans…

Barry: Abject failure on the international stage for a second tournament in a row, Steve Clarke has taken these players as far as he can and it would be better for all involved if he did the right thing and tore up that new contract. Scotland need fresh ideas.

Dougie: It’s not the manager’s fault. No manager makes the kind of mistakes on the pitch that Scotland made, but is he the guy to take it forward? There is such a thing as misplaced loyalty, and it’s clear these players can’t do tournament football successfully. If it was a club, there would be an almost total clearout.

William: Once again Scotland have been poor at a major tournament. They have been poor in all three games, giving away poor goals and not looking like scoring. The team don’t take responsibility and constantly take the easy option. Our players are simply not good enough. We don’t deserve to go through.

Hugh: We did our best. First World Cup in my lifetime (I am old enough to have voted three times). Genuinely proud of our boys, whether we go home tonight or not. We were drawn against Brazil and Morocco (again); they’re better teams, not much to be done about that. We had a good innings and we put up a good fight.

‘We gave it absolutely everything’

Going through is something few within the squad now expect. “A miracle” is required according to John McGinn and co.

In spells against the iconic yellow-clad Brazilians, though, they sprayed the ball about in a way which shouldn’t have required the near snookers they now need.

With the ball at their feet, the Scots were silky at times. By far, it was their most composed performance on the ball and for large chunks of their chastening defeat, they looked… decent.

But Clarke demanded more. Everyone demanded more.

“I think when you see the physicality, the power and the technique of both Morocco and Brazil, you can see that we have to try to do something of our own,” Clarke reported.

“Do better, that’s it. Be better in possession. Take responsibility.”

Can Scotland be better, though? Or is this them at their best?
