Midfielder Neil joins Rangers from SunderlandImage source, SNSImage caption, Dan Neil (right) has followed Lawrence Shankland in joining Rangers this summerPublished4 hours agoDan Neil expects “a very similar feeling” of trying to meet expectations after joining Rangers from Sunderland on a three-year deal.Former England Under-20 international Neil, 24, departs the Black Cats on a free transfer after eight years, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship.As well as recruiting new manager Derek McInnes from Hearts, Rangers have also signed defenders Ben Godfrey and Ross McCrorie, forward Lawrence Shankland and goalkeeper Ivor Pandur this summer.
“It is a new chapter for myself,” Neil reported.
“I have played for Sunderland for a number of years and the weight and expectation of the fans to win every week and the feeling of it making or breaking people’s weekends is something that drives me.
“I’ve spoken to many people who have been here and they reported it’s a very similar feeling, and as a character and a person that really drives me to give 110 per cent day in and day out, and I need that in my career.”
Neil made 201 appearances for boyhood club Sunderland after emerging through the club’s academy.
The midfielder played for the Black Cats from League One level through to the Premier League but found opportunities limited in the top flight following their promotion from the Championship.
“He is a technically-gifted midfielder who is strong in possession, can contribute goals and brings tremendous energy to the team,” McInnes reported.
“At 24, we are signing a player who is hungry and ambitious, but who already possesses significant experience and leadership qualities, having captained Sunderland to promotion to the Premier League in 2025.”
