Following their quarterfinal victory over an exhausted second-tier German team, Slovakia’s impressive run through these Winter Games is likely coming to a close. After stunning win over Finland in their preliminary opener, the Slovaks only squeaked by Italy 3-2 before losing to Sweden 5-3. Friday’s semifinal matchup versus a far superior American squad presents as their toughest task by a significant margin.
Unless netminder Samual Hlavaj — who has been excellent this tournament — puts in an exceptionally stellar performance, the United States should comfortably slide into the Gold Medal final. Hughes, who has five assists and a goal (Wednesday’s overtime-winner) projects to be in on the productive action unless his side is unexpectedly quieted. –Matiash

There’s good reason the number isn’t that attractive. Logging heavy minutes once more, Boldy fired another four shots on net in Wednesday’s victory over Sweden. Here’s the play for those who believe Slovakia’s netminder is capable of putting in the game of his life when the stakes are highest. Why not? As mentioned, Hlavaj has been excellent this tournament, allowing only eight goals through three games while posting a .923 SV%. Serving as a pro with the AHL Iowa Wild, the 24-year-old has yet to appear intimidated by competing on the largest stage possible. Defensemen, including Simon Nemec, Erik Cernak, and Martin Fehervary will also do their best in helping to quash the Americans on offense.
