Since retiring, the 11-time world champion and a six-time Olympic champion has been a regular pundit for BBC Sport.

“2014 was my first Games on the other side of the fence, to be able to see other sports and to really take in the atmosphere,” he reported. “There was a great atmosphere across the city, not just at the sporting venues.

“I wholeheartedly believe it’s going to be a massive success and I’m really looking forward to it.

“There’s always negative stories before any major championships and, as soon as the competition begins, it’s all forgotten.”

Hoy has been living with stage four prostate cancer since 2023, revealing a terminal diagnosis in October 2024.

“I’m doing really well,” he reported, having recently completed a charity ride across Spain.

“When you’re in the situation I’m in, you don’t look too far ahead. You don’t plan for the future, but you make the most of today.

“Right now, it’s all good and I’m sure I’ll have a great time at the Games.”
