Jos Buttler produced a masterful 90 from 50 balls as Manchester Super Giants demolished Birmingham Phoenix by 87 runs to maintain their perfect start to The Hundred.

After making his highest T20 score of 131 against India this month, the England wicketkeeper-batter continued his resurgence, striking seven fours and five sixes to lead the home side to 187-5.

It was the second highest Hundred total at Old Trafford and one that Phoenix fell well short of as they were bundled out for 100, handing Super Giants their second win in two matches.

The women’s fixture was washed out and the men’s game delayed by 30 minutes but, once the action got under way, fans were treated to a sensational innings from Buttler.

Super Giants suffered early setbacks as Tim Seifert and captain Aiden Markram fell cheaply, but Buttler combined power-hitting with deft touches around the ground to bring up his half-century in 31 balls.

Buttler’s superb innings came to end with three balls remaining, while Tom Moores added an unbeaten 39 from 17 deliveries.

Phoenix made a shaky start in their reply as Josh Tongue removed Will Smeed and Rehan Ahmed in consecutive balls on his way to figures of 2-21.

Opener Joe Clarke fell to Liam Dawson, who finished with 3-15, before Laurie Evans followed suit to leave Phoenix 43-4.

Captain Donovan Ferreira top-scored with 23, but the visitors never recovered from the early collapse as they slumped to their first defeat of the campaign.
