In the other Group B match, Sussex finally found the spark to ignite what has been a poor campaign to date, claiming a first One-Day Cup win of the summer by beating Essex to move off the bottom of the table.

Sussex, who were docked two points for financial mismanagement before the start of the season, were criticised by head coach Paul Farbrace after collapsing to 21-5 against Yorkshire at Hove on Sunday as he labelled their effort “unacceptable”.

But after Essex had posted 316-6 – with 21-year-old opener Noah Thain posting a maiden List A century with 102 and captain Tom Westley adding 84 – Sussex’s top order responded well.

Charlie Tear (73), Jack Carson (53) and Jack Leaning (59no), as well as starts for all the top seven batters, ensured Sussex always had the chase in hand, eventually winning by five wickets with four balls to spare.

In the sole Group A match, Warwickshire beat Surrey by 45 runs after Ed Barnard, with 140 in 130 balls, Zen Malik (58) and Vaansh Jani (66) helped the hosts to 341-4.

Surrey made a valiant attempt with half centuries from Dom Sibley and Josh Blake and even looked outside bets to chase the target down at 289-7, needing 53 off 27 balls.

But Oliver Hannon-Dalby, who had already taken two wickets, had other ideas, the Warwickshire seamer polishing off the remains of the innings with three wickets in six deliveries to close out the match and finish with 5-60.

It was a first win in four attempts for the Bears who inch ahead of Kent at the foot of Group A on net run rate.
