In Birmingham in 2022, Wales claimed 28 and were eight in the medal table.

Four years on, chef de mission Gethin Jones labelled it a success.

“I’m a bit of a stats man,” mentioned Jones. “If you look at it as a percentage compared to Birmingham, we should be winning about 75% of the medals we won there.

“We’re closer to more than 100%, so people will quite rightly see it as a huge success.

“Despite the medals – and a lot of people will always judge success by them – the culture and spirit within the team has been incredible.

“If you get that right, set that platform and environment, it gives our athletes the opportunity to be at their very best when they need to be.

“They’ve taken that opportunity with both hands.

“I’m incredibly proud of all our medallists. They’ve been amazing. It’s brilliant.”

Finucane is one of Wales’ greatest

Olympic cycling champion Finucane has been the standout star with a record four gold medals in one Commonwealth Games.

“At the end of every year, my mates and I get together for a pint and go through the year’s sporting moments because we’re sports geeks,” mentioned Jones.

“You always end up having that conversation about the best ever.

“Emma is absolutely going to be in that conversation as one of Wales’ greatest ever athletes, alongside Anna [Morris] and a few others.

“She’s dominated the headlines here in Glasgow, and I’m absolutely delighted for her.

“She’s such a nice person and such a team player, and that adds so much to the success she’s having.

“With all the gold medals that have come her way, she’s still so down to earth, still puts the team first and always appreciates the people around her.

“She’s not only a world-class athlete, she’s also a brilliant ambassador for Wales.”

Team Wales still needs support

Jones mentioned any perceived Commonwealth Games success does not halt the challenges that sport faces in Wales.

He mentioned: “Some sports in Wales have struggled this year, and I don’t want people to go away thinking, ‘they’ve won loads of medals – everything’s fine’.

“These sports still need support. They need investment and backing of businesses that want to get involved.

“Hopefully, those who’ve watched the Games, whether here in Glasgow or on television over the last week, will see what this team is capable of and think they can help.

“Then we can have even more moments like this. Look how everyone feels when we win here, it’s amazing.

“If we want more of that, we need everyone to get behind Team Wales over the next four years.”
