Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant is expected to be sidelined eight to 10 weeks due to a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and small fracture that he suffered at Monday’s practice, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

No surgery is expected to be needed, sources told Schefter.

The Bears signed Bryant to a three-year, $40 million deal in the offseason to shore up their defense. He played the past four seasons for the Seahawks, winning a Super Bowl last season.

The Bears won 11 games in coach Ben Johnson’s first season, but that was largely due to the offense and a league-leading number of turnovers for the defense. But they finished 29th in the NFL in total defense and 23rd in scoring defense.
