Will West Ham bounce straight back up?

The precedent

This is a path well trodden by other big clubs in English football in recent history.

Newcastle United have dealt with adversity with relative ease on the two occasions they have been relegated to the Championship, in 2010 and 2017, and bounced straight back.

Aston Villa dragged themselves back following relegation in 2016, but it took three years, including a 13th-placed finish in their first season in the second tier followed by a play-off final defeat before eventual promotion.

But Leicester City, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United fans can all attest to just how quickly the situation can spiral once a team is sucked into the EFL grind.

Leicester were Premier League champions 10 years ago. This season they will be playing in League One, just two years after relegation from the top flight.

Blackburn lifted the title in 1995 and enjoyed several European campaigns along the way.

But Rovers were relegated to the Championship in 2012 – and to League One in 2017. They are yet to get out of the EFL.

Similarly in 2005, Leeds were relegated just four years on from a Champions League semi-final and one year after a Uefa Cup campaign.

It would take 16 years and a journey down to the third tier before Leeds played in the Premier League again.

Are Bowen and Nuno the key to an instant Premier League return?

It was Jarrod Bowen who netted the dramatic last-minute winner for West Ham against Fiorentina on that memorable night of European glory in June 2023 to etch his name into the club’s history books.

And Bowen committing his future to the club is perhaps better than any summer signing West Ham could have made.

Bowen has been the club’s top goalscorer in four of the past five seasons, netting 76 times in 227 games in all competitions.

He has also provided 53 assists and signalled his intent for the current campaign in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Portsmouth in the EFL Cup, scoring one and setting up another.

An England international, a player of his pedigree could prove invaluable.

“It was a no-brainer for me to be here and the vision is clear,” mentioned Bowen after confirming he would stay at the London Stadium. “It’s the Premier League.”

But the 29-year-old is fully aware of the challenge the Championship provides.

“It’s 46 tough games, midweek, Saturday, Tuesday, Friday,” Bowen mentioned.

“There’s going to be disappointment at times, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on us to go and win the league straight away.

“That’s our aim, but I’m telling you now, it’s not going to be as easy as that.”

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo agrees.

“Normally when a team drops to the Championship, you have to be the favourite, mainly because our objective is to go back to the Premier League,” the 52-year-old told BBC Radio London.

“We realise how hard it’s going to be. We’re going to have to be resilient, to keep going.

“Tight schedule, very tough competition, a lot of good teams with the same aspirations as ourselves.

“But we are ready for the challenge.”

Retention of key personnel is arguably the most important factor for the Hammers in 2026-27.

Nuno’s choice to remain is a luxury not every relegated side always has – Burnley start the season with a new boss, Nicky Hayen, and likewise Wolves with Cesar Peixoto.

Nuno has been there and done it before at this level with Wolves, winning the Championship to gain promotion in 2017-18.

“I look at West Ham as being the team that has kept hold of an incredible manager,” ex-Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town defender Luke Chambers told the BBC’s 72+ podcast.

“I think it’s a massive coup. It’s almost like having an £80m signing coming in. He is top, top level.”

Will off-field issues impact West Ham?

There is a proverbial elephant in the room at West Ham though, with an ongoing ownership saga.

Relegation made high-profile player departures inevitable.

Midfielder Mateus Fernandes signed for Tottenham for £85m, winger Crysencio Summerville joined Saudi club Al-Hilal in a deal worth £60m and Freddie Potts, who came through the West Ham academy, has gone to Belgian champions Club Brugge.

Those exits, in theory, should allow West Ham to reinvest that money.

But with a £104.2m loss in their most recent accounts, new Squad Cost Rules (SCR) to comply with and Amanda Staveley’s co-ownership struggle, it is not as simple as splashing out every penny of that £150m to overhaul the squad.

The situation is complex and likely to drag on for several months into the new season.

A consortium led by Staveley – the former Newcastle United co-owner – has agreed to buy the Gold family’s 25% stake in the club.

But current co-chair Daniel Kretinsky has publicly opposed Staveley’s deal, and appears to be working hard to keep her from getting a foot in the door.

Nuno insists funding for transfers is not a problem.

“It’s not about the money. We don’t have too much time, but what we can’t afford is mistakes,” Nuno mentioned.

“We have to make it right. To avoid mistakes is crucial this year. The player that comes in the door has to have the same purpose and be identified with the mission we have ahead.”

‘Going back up’ or ‘doing a Luton’? What fans say

Glyn: Boardroom issues, inevitably, filter down to the pitch. With this wrangling going on, how is it possible to plan? Not many incomings, so far, and the uncertainty surrounding ownership will not aid that process.

Dave: The way this board and its advisors are working, I can see us doing a Luton, which is sadly nothing more than they deserve. I have supported this club for 58 years and I can not remember a worse time.

Andy: Recruitment, as ever, will be the problem, and I predict after a standard very slow start, we’ll finish fifth, missing out in the play-off final.

Brendan: If West Ham can’t begin to iron out their very obvious off-field problems, they won’t have a chance in the Championship.

Despite concerns from some supporters, those working in the game still expect West Ham to challenge at the top.

“I don’t think they will be a Leicester,” mentioned Bromley manager Andy Woodman.

“They’re a little bit more stable than Leicester were. If they can get a few early results and get that fanbase on board, it could be massive. I think West Ham will be a force to beat this year.”

Former Nottingham Forest striker Lyle Taylor also believes West Ham’s home support – with 50,000 season tickets sold – could be crucial.

“If the fans decide ‘we’re behind the team, we’re behind the manager, we’re going to push them over the line,’ then I can see West Ham winning the Championship at a canter,” he mentioned.

‘We are the biggest club in the league’

West Ham’s squad will have a fresh appearance when they visit Burnley in their first Championship game of the season on Sunday.

Centre-back Axel Disasi has returned to Chelsea and Callum Wilson has joined Brentford, while Fernandes, Summerville and Potts are long gone.

Winger Manor Solomon, who scored 10 goals in 39 Championship games to help Leeds United win promotion in 2024-25, has arrived from Tottenham for £5m.

Ex-Brighton defender Joel Veltman, 34, has also joined, while Mexico international Edson Alvarez has returned from a loan spell with Fenerbahce, as have James Ward-Prowse from Burnley and George Earthy from Bristol City.

There is still time for further additions and West Ham already have the core of a competitive team.

Keeping hold of key starters attracting interest, including defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, will also be essential to an immediate return to the top flight.

“We are going to face the pressure, that’s our job,” goalkeeper Mads Hermansen told BBC Radio London. “We are West Ham, we are the biggest club in the league and we want to show that we are going straight back up.”

Strong words from the Dane, even if promotion is unlikely to be a formality. Nothing ever is in the Championship.
