Three-time Pro-Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon and the Seattle Seahawks have reached an agreement on a four-year, $132 million extension, sources tell ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The deal includes over $101 million in guaranteed money, sources added, making him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
The deal took longer than expected to be completed given that the Seahawks turned their attention to extending Witherspoon right after making Jaxon Smith-Njigba the NFL’s highest-paid wide receiver in March. One possible hangup was that New England Patriots star corner Christian Gonzalez, who shares the same agent as Witherspoon, is also up for a top-of-the-market extension. But Witherspoon’s deal is now done on the day the Seahawks open their preseason against the Dallas Cowboys.
Witherspoon had been practicing throughout the offseason and into training camp despite not having an extension in place.
Coach Mike Macdonald recently praised Witherspoon’s approach amid negotiations, saying he was “really impressed” by his ability to compartmentalize the business side of things.
In last week’s season premiere of “Hard Knocks,” Witherspoon stated he was “not worried” about the contract talks, choosing instead to focus on getting prepared for the regular season.
Witherspoon, 25, has made the Pro Bowl on the initial ballot in each of his first three seasons. He’s one of the physical and emotional tone-setters for Seattle’s defense, which allowed the fewest points in 2025 before leading the Seahawks to a 29-13 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl LX.
Witherspoon was one of the stars of that game, recording a sack of Drake Maye and delivering the hit on New England’s quarterback that led to a pick-six by Uchenna Nwosu.
The Seahawks drafted Witherspoon with the fifth pick in 2023, which they acquired from the Denver Broncos in the Russell Wilson trade. Seattle took Smith-Njigba 20th overall that year. The two have since developed into franchise cornerstones and Super Bowl champions.
Witherspoon became the fourth player in team history to be named to the Pro Bowl in each of his first three seasons. Last year, as the Seahawks were commemorating their 50th season, they named him one of the franchise’s 50 greatest players of all-time. His resume now includes a Super Bowl championship and a record-setting contract as well.
In March, the Seahawks exercised Witherspoon’s fifth-year option at a cost of roughly $21.2 million for 2027. He was set to make just under $5.1 million in 2026.
