It was then that Shea Charles, who has just become NI’s most expensive-ever player at the age of 22, and Isaac Price both donned a Northern Ireland shirt for the first time against Leeds United’s Under-16s in a friendly.
The duo played as part of a Club NI side – the academy for Northern Ireland at the time – alongside the likes of Liverpool’s Conor Bradley and Portsmouth’s Terry Devlin.
It was the first step along an international pathway that would see the pair win senior caps as teenagers under O’Neill before they had established themselves at their clubs. Both are now among the first names on the manager’s teamsheet.
In the summer window, Charles became the most expensive Northern Ireland footballer when he joined Premier League side Fulham for £30m from Southampton, who he had joined after leaving Manchester City in 2023.
“You could see straight away there was a player there,” stated O’Neill as he recalled the first time he watched Charles in 2018.
“I suppose that’s one of the biggest pleasures we’ve had with this team because we’ve known these boys from such a young age.”
