SEATTLE — For Bryce Miller and the Seattle Mariners, when it rains, it pours.
Miller lost his second straight start Sunday by a huge margin after the Chicago Cubs crushed the Mariners 19-2, five days after he took the mound for a historic 22-0 beatdown by the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
The right-hander is only the fourth pitcher in MLB history to lose consecutive starts by that many runs since 1890, according to ESPN Research.

Seattle is the fifth team in the last 125 seasons to lose two games by at least 17 runs in a six-game span, according to ESPN Research, and the first since the 1933 Phillies.
Things fell apart for Miller on Sunday in the third inning, when he surrendered a grand slam to Ian Happ after issuing three straight two-out walks. He had a career-high seven walks in the game and was ultimately tagged for six runs in 4⅓ innings. He finished with a similar line against the Brewers on Tuesday, giving up five earned runs in 4⅓ innings of work.
Most of the damage in Sunday’s game came after Seattle waved the white flag. Backup catcher Jhonny Pereda was responsible for seven runs in the eighth inning, including a grand slam from Pedro Ramirez.
Miller is 4-8 with a 4.12 ERA on the season but has lost his last eight starts for Seattle.
The Mariners fared mostly well in the five games between blowouts, going 3-2 vs. Milwaukee and Chicago. They sit three games back of the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers for the top spot in the AL West.
