A low-scoring first half, which featured periods of intense pressure from both sides, yielded just one score with Sam Gilbert’s penalty enough to give Connacht a slender advantage at the break.

But after Connacht second row Joe Joyce was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on Ben Afshar, Rowe scored the game’s opening try on the hour mark.

In windy conditions, however, Adam Hastings missed the conversion before Gilbert missed a penalty to put Connacht 6-5 up.

With Joyce still off the field, Rowe provided the moment of the match when he collected a crossfield kick from Dan Lancaster – the son of Connacht head coach Stuart Lancaster – and beat Jack Carty and Finn Treacy to score.

With Hastings missing another conversion attempt, Connacht levelled the game at 10-10 when Josh Murphy forced his way over from close range before Jansen’s dramatic late score sparked celebrations from the home players in Galway.
