Friday’s ACC Tournament semifinals will feature a chalky vibe, as four the league’s top five seeds survived the quarterfinals to set the stage for a compelling set of matchups. Up first will be No. 2 seed Virginia taking on No. 3 seed Miami. The Cavaliers won the only regular-season meeting 86-83 at home on Feb. 21.
The second semifinal will pit top-seeded Duke against No. 5 seed Clemson as the shorthanded Blue Devils try and maintain their grasp on the No. 1 overall seed in CBS Sports Bracketology. With starters Caleb Foster and Patrick Ngongba II out due to injury, Duke used just seven players on Thursday. The short rotation could be a problem on short rest against a deep Clemson team.
Virginia began its postseason journey with an 81-74 win over NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on Thursday as the Cavaliers knocked down a dozen 3-pointers and dominated the paint. The No. 2 seed Cavaliers also held the No. 7 seed Wolfpack to just 36.8% shooting. The second quarterfinal brought another thriller between Miami and Louisville as the No. 3 seed Hurricanes edged the No. 6 seed Cardinals 78-73 behind 24 points from Malik Reneau.
It was the evening showdown between No. 1 seed Duke and No. 8 seed Florida State that stole the show, though. The Blue Devils escaped with an 80-79 win over the surging Seminoles when FSU guard Robert McCray’s potential game-winner missed the mark just before the final horn. Finally, the nightcap brought Clemson’s third straight victory as the No. 5 seed Tigers edged No. 4 seed North Carolina 80-79 behind a balanced offensive effort that saw six players reach double figures.
