March 30: Rookies that should be rostered

Rookie heroics dominated baseball’s opening weekend, as three players making their MLB debuts homered on an Opening Day for the first time in history, and two rookies hit home runs in each of their first three big-league games (they are two of the four in history to do that).
It served a reminder of the immense talent possessed by the group and the importance to ensure that the following first-year players are rostered in your league:

Kevin McGonigle, SS, Detroit Tigers (rostered in 57.4% of ESPN leagues): He became the third-youngest rookie in the past 100 seasons to record four hits on Opening Day.

JJ Wetherholt, SS/2B, St. Louis Cardinals (52.0% rostered): He was one of the three to homer on Opening Day and had hits in all three weekend games.

Chase DeLauter, OF, Cleveland Guardians (68.5%): He joined Wetherholt among those to homer on Opening Day (also Carson Benge of the New York Mets) and, along with Munetaka Murakami of the Chicago White Sox, homered in each of his first three games (they joined Trevor Story and Kyle Lewis in the history books).

March 30: Monday morning’s news to know

It’s a rare 15-game slate for Monday, with action getting underway at 4:10 p.m. ET as the Kansas City Royals host the Minnesota Twins. In sharp contrast to last season, Mother Nature cooperated throughout Opening Day weekend and, while a few balls may have been lost in the sun, there weren’t any games postponed due to rain.

Jake Fraley was scratched from yesterday’s series finale between the Tampa Bay Rays and St. Louis Cardinals due to a sore right shoulder. Jonny DeLuca filled in as the right fielder. Fraley’s status for today’s road tilt with the Milwaukee Brewers is unclear.

Carlos Estevez was unavailable for yesterday’s game between the Royals and Atlanta Braves. Last year’s saves leader experienced significantly reduced velocity throughout spring training and into the regular season, giving up six runs in just one-third of an inning last Saturday. However, his unavailability was due to being hit in the ankle by a line drive, and he was in a walking boot yesterday. Lucas Erceg logged Sunday’s save, with Matt Strahm getting the final two outs of the seventh inning. Manager Matt Quatraro indicated that Estevez would likely be used in low-leverage situations while he works to regain his form. It isn’t certain that Erceg is the clear-cut replacement, as Strahm was brought in with a runner on second to face lefty Michael Harris II with one out.

The Atlanta Braves optioned Didier Fuentes to Triple-A Gwinnett after he yielded just one earned run over four frames yesterday. The 20-year-old righty was impressive in camp and is expected to enter the Stripers rotation to get stretched out for an eventual return to Atlanta as a starting pitcher. Martin Perez was called up to take the roster spot and is slated to take the mound tomorrow.

Not only is Yordan Alvarez off to a strong start, but the Houston Astros have let him play left field twice in four games. It’s unclear if Alvarez will maintain this pace, but if he does, he’ll gain OF eligibility by mid-April (although it will take a bit longer in leagues with a 10-game minimum).

Similarly, Ivan Herrera was behind the plate for the Cardinals in their second game of the season. While it was stated that he’ll see significant action at catcher, knee inflammation late in the spring left his timetable for defensive play uncertain. It’s encouraging that he was able to get into the shinguards so early on. We’ll have a better idea of how often Herrera will catch later this week. If he’d been catcher-eligible to enter the season, he would have been a top-10 fantasy backstop.

March 29: Sunday morning’s news to know

The first Sunday night game of the year features the Seattle Mariners hosting the Cleveland Guardians at 7:20 p.m. ET.
Concerns about Carlos Estevez‘s velocity drop in the spring came to fruition yesterday as the Kansas City Royals’ closer blew a save by yielding six runs in one-third of an inning, allowing four hits and two walks. His fastball was about 4 mph slower than last season’s average. Lucas Erceg and Matt Strahm would be next in line for saves.
The Milwaukee Brewers placed Andrew Vaughn on the 10-day IL after imaging divulged a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. He’s set for surgery tomorrow, with an expected recovery of four to six weeks. Catcher Jeferson Quero was called up from Triple-A Nashville, which will allow Gary Sanchez to platoon with Jake Bauers at first base.
The Miami Marlins placed Christopher Morel on the 10-day IL after he was diagnosed with a left oblique strain. He’s expected to be out four to six weeks. Deyvison De Los Santos was called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to fill the open roster spot and help fill in at first base, along with Connor Norby. Graham Pauley, who couldn’t throw for much of the spring, is ready to take over at third base.
Jacob deGrom was scratched from yesterday’s start with a neck issue, with Jacob Latz taking the hill for the Texas Rangers in their interleague affair with the Philadelphia Philles. The club is optimistic that deGrom will not need an IL stint and will be able to start later this week.
CJ Abrams missed yesterday’s game as he was away from the team due to a death in the family. It’s unclear whether the Washington Nationals will place him on the bereavement list. Nasim Nunez moved over to shortstop yesterday, with Jorbit Vivas filling in at second base.
