It was an active weekend in women’s boxing where one champion retained and one fell, while a new name tops the atomweight division.
Alycia Baumgardner turned back a late charge from Bo Ri Me Shin to retain her IBF, WBA and WBO lightweight titles with a hard-fought unanimous decision win. Baumgardner took an early lead but had to deal with a relentless Shin. Baumgardner appeared to be closing in on her first stoppage win in over five years, but Shin charged back in Round 6 and rattled the champion with uppercuts and crosses. Ultimately, Baumgardner’s experience came into play as she outboxed Shin with a jab and effective counterpunching to close the fight.
Baumgardner remains the No. 1 junior lightweight but the same cannot be mentioned for her fellow Most Valuable Promotions stablemate Shadasia Green. The now former champion had sought to line up a potential superfight with top pound-for-pound fighter Claressa Shields by beating another of her former opponents, Lani Daniels. However, Daniels brought the fight to Green from the opening bell. The two engaged in ferocious exchanges but the beating eventually wore Green down, leading to a ninth-round stoppage that sent the former champion to the hospital with an apparent brain bleed. Daniels win not only lands her at No. 1 in the women’s super middleweight division but halted a two-fight losing streak while netting her the IBF and WBO titles.
Elsewhere, Esneidy Rodriguez Olmos remained unbeaten with a one-sided decision over Eri Matsuda. Olmos takes her place at the top of the atomweight division with the win while Matsuda drops to No. 4 in a weight class that is still shaking itself out following the retirement of Tina Rupprecht six months ago.
Rankings are updated every Tuesday. They’re based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven’t fought in 18 months and don’t have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
