The first day of the women’s regional semifinals produced two notable upsets, with Notre Dame overcoming a 6.5-point spread to defeat Vanderbilt, followed by Duke beating LSU as a 9.5-point underdog on a thrilling buzzer-beater. However, those underdogs will now have an even more immense task on their hands as they play UConn and UCLA, respectively, in the next round.
Those undesirable paths have the Blue Devils facing down 150-1 national championship odds, with the Irish at 200-1, which is actually a notable improvement from 300-1 before the upset win; Duke’s odds have actually lengthened from 120-1 since last round. Meanwhile, the Huskies (-270) and Bruins (+475) continue to occupy the top spots on the odds board, with 1-seeds Texas (+800) and South Carolina (+850), who will be in action Saturday, the only other teams shorter than 80-1.
Notre Dame’s upset of Vanderbilt also had another effect: There are now no more perfect brackets in ESPN’s Women’s Tournament Challenge.
