Berths in the Big East title game will be decided Friday with intriguing semifinal matchups on deck. St. John’s faces No. 4 seed Seton Hall in the first game of the doubleheader, followed by UConn taking on Georgetown.
The action comes after Day 2 at Madison Square Garden provided little drama until the final game of the evening, when No. 11 seed Georgetown upset No. 3 seed Villanova 78-64. It marked the second consecutive day the Hoyas pulled off an upset in the Big East Tournament.
The Hoyas are in the Big East Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2021, the year the program won its most recent conference title.
No. 1 seed St. John’s began the day with an 85-72 win over Providence. The loss — pending an invitation to a postseason tournament outside the NCAA Tournament — will likely be the final game for coach Kim English at the school. English and Providence are expected to part ways at the conclusion of the season.
No. 2 seed UConn also advanced to the semifinals with a 92-68 win over Xavier. The Huskies were playing their first game since suffering an upset loss in the regular-season finale against Marquette.
The Big East title game is set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
