NFL preseason is underway. The newcomers that arrived on their respective teams during the first major waves of free agency and the 2026 NFL Draft have settled into their new environments and will now spend the coming weeks gearing up for their debut seasons in new uniforms. As teams introduce their rookies to the pros and weave in their veteran pickups, they also continue to look to improve on the periphery. Not every roster hole was filled in March and April, after all, and there is a notable advantage to signing free agents after the NFL Draft: They no longer count against the NFL’s compensatory picks formula. That resulted in a slight uptick in the spring, but most of the post-draft signings will continue to trickle in this summer as still-unsigned vets start finding new homes during training camp. Each of the top 36 players on Pete Prisco’s annual free agent ranking has signed, but there is still plenty of quality talent available as the NFL calendar moves through its quietest months. On Aug. 18, the Colts were the just in team to scoop up a player on Pete’s top 100, signing Keenan Allen to a one-year deal.
Allen, 34, has spent 12 of his 13 NFL seasons with the Chargers and remained productive last year for Los Angeles, catching 81 passes for 777 yards and four touchdowns. The six-time Pro Bowler ranks 13th all-time with 1,055 career receptions and could move into the top 10 this year.

The Colts were in need of wide receiver help, with Alec Pierce still on the mend from ankle surgery. Josh Downs and Tyler Warren figure to feature heavily as Daniel Jones’ top targets, though Allen could see a crucial role, especially on third downs.
