The best pound-for-pound fighter today is back. Islam Makhachev has likely eclipsed his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, after becoming a two-division champion. Now he seeks to prove he’s the best MMA fighter ever. His next stop in that journey is a welterweight title defense in Philadelphia against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330.
Makhachev makes history with each appearance. He joined the unique champ-champ club in his last appearance. Before that, he set the record for most UFC lightweight title defenses. On Saturday, he could break Anderson Silva’s 16-fight undefeated streak, a record that’s stood for 14 years. Garry is the only thing standing in his way. The brash Irishman fights with incredible discipline and leans on the knowledge passed down by former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira.
UFC 330 features a second title fight. Women’s strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern makes her first title defense against Gillian Robertson. Dern is among the most popular faces in the division. The unheralded Robertson is Canada’s best hope for a UFC title, looking to snap a nearly decade-long cold streak.
