Texas made its path to a repeat championship far more difficult by dropping its opening game of the Women’s College World Series, but the Longhorns battled all the way back in Oklahoma City, fending off elimination to reach the championship series with a pair of wins over No. 7 Tennessee on MondayAfter falling 6-3 to the Lady Vols in the first meeting between the teams last Thursday, No. 2 Texas responded by winning four straight to reach the championship series. The Longhorns opened the day with a 5-2 victory to force a winner-take-all semifinal, then finished the job in the rematch with a 4-0 win.In the first win, Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart each homered to spark the lineup, while Citlaly Gutierrez delivered 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball to keep Tennessee in check. With the game tightening late, Texas turned to ace Teagan Kavan, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the final inning, striking out Elsa Morrison to seal the win and set up the decisive rematch.Texas struck early in the second meeting and never let go of control. A three-run third inning broke open a scoreless game, with Viviana Martinez driving in the first run, Kayden Henry scoring on a double steal and Atwood adding an RBI double to cap the rally. Katie Stewart later added a solo home run — her 30th of the season and third in the last three WCWS games — to push the lead to 4-0. From there, the Longhorns held off every Tennessee push to complete the comeback and secure a spot in the championship series.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Alabama and No. 11 Texas Tech will meet in a deciding semifinal Monday night to determine the final spot in the championship series. The Red Raiders must beat the Crimson Tide twice to advance, while an Alabama win in the first game sends them back to the title series for the first time since 2014.For the complete schedule and results for every matchup at Devon Park, follow along right here at CBS Sports. All times ETWomen’s College World Series scheduleMonday, June 1Game 11: No. 2 Texas 5, No. 7 Tennessee 2Game 12: No. 2 Texas 4, No. 7 Tennessee 0Game 13: No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 11 Texas Tech (7 p.m. ESPN)Game 14 (if necessary): Rematch of Game 13 (9:30 p.m. ESPN)
