Analysis – further firepower to aid Arsenal’s title tilt

In 2025-26, Arsenal were the second top scorers in the WSL behind Manchester City, but their title bid ran aground amid fixture congestion in the latter weeks of the season.

Club stalwart Mead, 31, had been a reliable option for nine seasons, but was injured for much of last season and only contributed two league goals before her release – and subsequent arrival at the champions.

In Cerci, Arsenal have sourced a player who, at 26, is entering her prime and has consistently showcased her goalscoring instincts, despite not playing for either of German football’s two powerhouses in Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg.

She has reported she is excited about “stepping out of my comfort zone” and this will be her first time outside of Germany and playing Champions League football.

Her adjustment period will be important as not every foreign import integrates quickly. For instance, compatriot Lea Schuller only managed one goal in 11 appearances (six starts) for Manchester United last season, despite arriving with tremendous pedigree in German football.

And Arsenal, who have started slowly the past two seasons, cannot afford to do so again if they are to run down leaders City and win their first title since 2019.
