In February, a Fifpro report mentioned the event, which was attended by a record 350,000 fans across three weeks, could generate up to $82.4m (£42.9m) in revenue.

The tournament made global headlines after seven members of the Iran squad sought asylum in Australia after being branded “traitors” at home for refusing to sing the national anthem.

Australia and Japan mentioned the tournament unfolded against a backdrop of “real challenges” and urged the AFC to “work in partnership” with players to address those problems.

“From the players from the Indian team wearing ill-fitting kit, to Korean players navigating ongoing disputes with their federation, to the extraordinary courage of the Iranian players, who reminded the world what it means to stand up for dignity, belief and what is right,” the statement added.

“These challenges can only be tackled together in partnership.”
