You’ve got to take chances. That last leg was probably my best of the game.”I’m back on top of the table, Luke Littler can start chasing me again.”Despite falling just short of a first nightly win since the opening week in Newcastle, Van Gerwen’s run to the final helped him shore up his play-off place and open up a four-point gap to fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen in fifth.Littler slumps to quarter-final lossIt is back-to-back quarter-final exits for Luke Littler, and the world number one was a long way from his best as he fell to a 6-4 loss to Bunting.Littler was booed by the crowd on his way to the stage after his spat with Van Veen last week and failed to get going at any stage, averaging just 83.94 in what could have been a far more comprehensive defeat but for Bunting’s slack finishing.
That ultimately cost The Bullet as he was beaten 6-5 by Van Gerwen in the semi-finals.
Defending champion Luke Humphries also suffered another damaging defeat to leave him facing a real battle to reach the play-offs.
Humphries had the darts for the deciding leg against Clayton but missed a match dart before the Welshman secured a 6-5 win on the bull.
With six weeks remaining, Humphries is still without a nightly win and is now seventh in the table, five points off fourth.
In-form Welshman Gerwyn Price fell at the quarter-final stage as well, losing 6-3 to Northern Ireland’s Josh Rock.
But Rock’s wait to reach a first final goes on as he went down 6-4 to Clayton in the last four.
