The striker has signed a five-year deal at the City Ground after just a year at Stamford Bridge.

“This is a massive club with a big history,” Delap stated.

“I spoke to the manager (Oliver Glasner) and I like his way, I think he can be the one to really help me develop and make that next step and hopefully I can bring goals here.

“As a team we can build something really strong and the main aim is to challenge and be a top club in the Premier League.”

In a summer of staggering transfer fees, the move stands out.

An outlay of £50m for a striker who scored one league goal last season – at a £20m profit to Chelsea – has caught the eye.

But Delap is only 23 and has scored goals in the Premier League before.

BBC Sport examines whether a move to Forest can reignite the career of a young player hoping to marry progress with his undoubted potential.

The good

The finest season of Delap’s career to date was undoubtedly his first of regular football at the highest level.

When Ipswich paid an initial £15m for his services from Manchester City in July 2024, it appeared sensible business – a below market value fee for a promising England Under-21 international with the capacity to improve quickly.

The faith of then Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was repaid in spades when Delap scored 12 goals in his first Premier League campaign in 2024-25 despite operating in a side that would win four games all season and go on to be relegated in 19th place.

Key to his success at Portman Road was a manager who played to Delap’s strengths of power, physicality and ability to carry the ball at pace.

He made 26 shot-ending carries that season – the most of any striker in the Premier League.

A burst of six goals and one assist in the first 12 games of that campaign saw Delap earn widespread acclaim from former players.

On Match of the Day in November 2024, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy stated: “I would probably go as far as to say he is the obvious long-term successor to [Harry] Kane. I think he is the best young English striker out there.

“I just don’t see a weakness for him. He has scored enough goals in a struggling side really, but if he gets a lot of chances he will score more.

“He has just got that lovely balance between physical and technical [ability] and rarely do you get both. He is a super talent.”

The bad

“Can Liam play for the biggest clubs in the country, the biggest clubs in the world? He certainly can. I fully believe that.” The words of McKenna when Delap began to be linked with a raft of top-flight teams towards the end of 2024-25.

The son of former Derby County defender Rory ultimately opted for Stamford Bridge.

The decision to join a congested Chelsea squad as a still-raw talent was met with some scepticism but the attraction of reuniting with then Blues head coach Enzo Maresca may have been a decisive factor.

Maresca was Manchester City’s under-21 boss when Delap enjoyed great success with the club’s academy, scoring 24 goals in 20 matches in 2020-21 as City won the Premier League 2 title.

His move to Chelsea did not work out. It began with Delap’s decision to rule himself out of last summer’s Under-21 European Championship – a tournament that England would go on to win – to make himself available for Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign.

The former Stoke, Preston and Hull striker then scored just three goals in 47 appearances, a loss of form which resulted in Chelsea giving Delap’s number nine shirt to Joao Pedro before his departure was sanctioned this summer.

Delap’s struggles at Chelsea have been underpinned by three managerial changes and hamstring and shoulder injuries, but also difficulties adjusting to a different gameplan.

Whereas Ipswich used Delap’s speed effectively by counter-attacking into space behind high defensive lines, Chelsea focused more on building possession.

In 2025-26, Chelsea totalled 123 build-up attacks and 613 sequences of 10 passes or more. In 2024-25, Ipswich’s respective numbers were 57 and 247.

As a result, the capacity for Delap to carry the ball at pace into space and shoot – arguably his unique selling point as a player – was dramatically reduced. He made just six shot-ending carries for Chelsea in the Premier League, having amassed 26 for Ipswich and 38 in the previous season with Hull in the Championship.

The ugly

Shorn of confidence and lacking minutes, Delap was still culpable for failing to take chances last season.

At Ipswich, his shot conversion rate was a career-best 17.7%, scoring 12 goals from an expected goals tally of only 9.3. At Chelsea, his shot conversion rate dropped to just 2.8%, scoring only once in the league from an xG of 4.5.

Confidence aside, part of the puzzle still to be solved with Delap is how best to utilise his impressive strength without his penchant for the physical element of Premier League football becoming counter productive.

Unnecessary tangles with defenders are so often a hallmark of Delap’s do-or-die approach, even when playing his best football.

He competed in 413 duels in 2024-25, ranking him third of all Premier League players aged under 23, but only won 157 of them – suggesting he has the tendency to chase lost causes.

Additionally, he committed the second-most fouls of any player (72) and ranked joint second overall for bookings, matching 12 goals with 12 yellows cards that season.

The Glasner effect

The overriding positive for Forest fans digesting Delap’s inflated fee – which can be partly explained by Ipswich reportedly receiving 20% of any profit made on their £30m sale to Chelsea last summer – is that manager Oliver Glasner’s man-management and tactical set-up are both likely to suit the new arrival.

Glasner tends to prefer playing without the ball – his Crystal Palace team averaged 46% possession last season – while the Austrian also likes to attack directly at pace, suiting Delap’s natural assets.

Glasner also has recent form for turning around a centre-forward’s career after transforming Jean-Philippe Mateta at Palace.

Mateta improved his shot conversion rate and halved the number of minutes it took to score goals under Glasner, operating in the same type of target-man role that Delap is set to fulfill at Forest

Delap also remains a valuable commodity in the sense he is one of only 10 English forwards aged 23 or under playing regularly in Europe’s top five leagues.

Once heralded as Kane’s successor, international ambitions may have to wait for the time being.

But Glasner improved Mateta to the point of playing at the World Cup earlier this summer with France.

Significant interest will surround how far he can take Delap.
