The Exiles players are due to return for pre-season training on Monday before kicking off the 2026-27 season with a Carabao Cup game at AFC Wimbledon on the weekend of 8 August before a League Two opener against Rochdale a week later.

Newport have made six signings in a rebuild for the new campaign – Harrison Biggins, Christian Doidge, Cameron Norman, Dan Sassi, Shaquille Gwengwe and Yahya Bamba – but have also lost key figures Bobby Kamwa and Matt Baker at the end of their contracts.

Chairman Huw Jenkins was plotting for the season under Fuchs but is now searching for a fourth boss of his ownership of the club following the departures of Graham Coughlan, Nelson Jardim and Hughes before the Austrian.

It is the third successive summer that there has been a managerial change at Rodney Parade.
