England midfielder Jordan Henderson is expected to have surgery on the wrist he injured while celebrating his side’s last-16 win over Mexico, casting doubt over his participation in the remainder of the World Cup.
The 36-year-old appeared to land awkwardly as he fell over the advertising hoardings at the Azteca Stadium and left the pitch on a stretcher.
“Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad,” England head coach Thomas Tuchel stated on BBC One after the 3-2 victory.
“It’s a quite serious injury and it doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital.”
Henderson was accompanied to hospital in Mexico City by a member of England’s support staff after the game on Monday and did not travel back with the team to their Kansas City base.
It is understood the Brentford midfielder is keen to stay with the squad for the remainder of their time in the United States.
