Lancs, Yorks, Durham & Notts reach One-Day Cup knockouts as Flintoff hits first ton

Group A: Lancs and Notts join Leics in qualifying

Lancashire piled on a staggering 443-6 from their 50 overs in their victory over Somerset at Taunton – a record-breaking total reached thanks in no small part to sizeable hundreds from Jennings and Flintoff.

Opener Jennings hit 156 from 127 balls at the top of the innings to set a ferocious pace as Lancashire posted their highest ever List A score – eclipsing the 406-9 effort against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2019.

Teenager Flintoff joined in the fun, firing 10 fours and seven sixes on his way to 123 from just 76 balls. There was even time for Jack Blatherwick’s quick-fire cameo of 32 from just 10 balls.

Somerset struggled to cope with the intense scoreboard pressure from the off and found themselves 33-2 when Tom Aspinwall (4-42) removed openers Johnny Connell and Savin Perera.

Tom Lammonby, who racked up 547 runs in this competition, hit 68 more but Somerset were bowled out for 269 as Lancashire advanced.

Surrey openers Ryan Patel and Dom Sibley put on 175 for their side’s first wicket as they took on Nottinghamshire at the Oval, but Munsey’s knock in the chase proved decisive.

Sibley departed for 84 but Patel brought up his century in 91 balls to lay a platform for the hosts, but Nottinghamshire fought back to reduce Surrey to 298-8 following a notable spell from Dillon Pennington (4-54).

Notts lost openers Freddie McCann and Ben Martindale relatively cheaply, but Munsey (138 from 132 balls)) and captain Haseeb Hameed (51) restored control to the visitors’ chase and put on 109 for the third wicket.

Kyle Verreynne’s unbeaten 57 carried Nottinghamshire over the line.

At Rugby School, Warwickshire eased to a comfortable 87-run victory at the expense of Kent, although neither side will advance beyond Group A.

The Bears were bowled out for 263, a total they reached after Vansh Jani’s destructive 98 – the second time he has posted a career-best List A knock in three days.

Matt Milnes (4-52) led the Kent charge to ensure Warwickshire were all out with 29 balls remaining of their innings, having been put in.

Kent found themselves 23-5 after Bears seamer Ethan Bamber (4-29) ran through the top order. There was admirable resistance from Ekansh Singh (40) and Grant Stewart (41), but Kent were bowled out for 176 with a third of their overs unused.

Northamptonshire found themselves 27-2 against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College but 79 from captain Nathan McSweeney and 75 from George Bartlett stabilised the visitors’ innings.

Dominic Leech helped to elevate the visitors up to 308 having been put in by their hosts when he added 35 before being bowled by Daaryoush Ahmed, who finished with figures of 4-56.

Openers James Bracey and Cameron Bancroft put on 99 to tee up Gloucestershire but they then found themselves 200-5 and still with plenty of work to do.

Ahmed (48) again proved key, this time with bat in hand, as he and Joseph Eckland (68 not out) steered Gloucestershire to their target.

Group B: Durham lose but qualify with Middlesex and Yorks

Yorkshire secured second spot in Group B with a seven-wicket win over Essex to book a home quarter-final at York on Friday.

Captain Dom Bess (3-32) and seamer Ben Coad (3-22) helped bowl out already-eliminated Essex for 151 inside 41 overs.

The Tykes then slipped to 15-2, but a second first-team half-century for England Under-19s man Will Bennison, who hit 60 off 59 balls, helped the visitors to their sixth win in eight group matches with more than 18 overs to spare – and a second quarter-final place in successive seasons.

Durham gained third place in the group but not before some late dramatic twists against the holders Worcestershire at New Road.

Worcestershire won the game by 77 runs on the back of being bowled out for a competitive 291, thanks largely to Tom Taylor’s quickfire 86.

Ben McKinney then plundered 82 from just 70 balls but when he was out with Durham on 141-6, they still needed a further 63 to be sure of finishing above the hosts in the group.

When three more wickets went down in eight balls for the addition of just five runs, at 199-9, Durham still needed five more to reach that initial target of 204. They got them but not long before being bowled out for 214.

Hampshire had their hopes of reaching the knockout stages for a fifth successive year ended by Derbyshire in a thriller at Southampton.

Martin Andersson made 125, his fourth hundred of the summer across all formats, enjoying century stands with Harry Came (62) and Brooke Guest (67) as Derbyshire totalled 317-5.

But former Hertfordshire player Andrew Neal then almost turned the game on its head in Hampshire’s reply.

Coming to the crease at 134-6, with 183 still required, he smashed 10 sixes in a 63-ball 110, his maiden professional century at the age of 26, before being caught on the boundary edge with nine runs still needed as Hants were bowled out for 309, with 10 overs to spare.

James Cracknell shared a third-wicket partnership of 202 with Nathan Fernandes (92) as Middlesex recovered from losing two early wickets to post a formidable 354-8 as they cruised to a 92-run win over Sussex at Radlett.

Half-centuries by former Middlesex man John Simpson (65) and Oli Carter (58) enabled Sussex to mount a respectable reply, but they were dismissed for 262 to finish bottom of Group B with just one win.
