June 17: Wednesday’s news to know
By Todd Zola
There are 14 games on today’s docket, commencing at 12:40 p.m. ET with the Cincinnati Reds hosting the New York Mets. In Arlington, the Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins have the day off thanks to a World Cup match at nearby AT&T Stadium taking place this afternoon.
-
The resumption of last night’s suspended game between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants will begin at 2:00 p.m. ET today with the Giants leading 3-2 and the Braves due up in the bottom of the second inning. In ESPN leagues, only players who were active last night will have stats from this game count this afternoon. Please note, Robbie Ray was initially set to start the regularly scheduled game tonight, but the Giants plan on having the lefty enter the resumed game in the bottom of the second inning. If Ray was not active for you last night, he will not accrue points.
-
Michael Harris II‘s availability for the regularly scheduled night game is uncertain. He was removed from last night’s contest due to lower back tightness. Eli White replaced him and will likely remain in center field for the completion of the suspended game and possibly the evening tilt, too.
-
The Seattle Mariners were happy that both J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh came off the IL prior to last night’s game, but the enthusiasm was tempered by Randy Arozarena being placed on the 10-day IL due to left hamstring inflammation. Connor Joe is expected to be summoned from Triple-A Tacoma to replace Arozarena. Crawford started at third base so that rookie Colt Emerson could stay at shortstop, which is his natural position. Crawford agreed to the move while he was sidelined, which makes sense as all of his defensive metrics at shortstop are declining.
-
The Mariners also played last night’s 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles without 1B Josh Naylor, who is nursing a bruised shin and sore wrist. Naylor fouled a ball off his leg on Sunday with X-rays coming back negative. Monday’s off day wasn’t enough for either ailment to heal enough to let Naylor play. He’s considered to be day-to-day with Miles Mastrobuoni set to fill in if needed.
-
Maikel Garcia left last night’s game for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning. He reportedly hurt his hand while at the plate in the fourth. His availability for this afternoon’s series finale between the Kansas City Royals and the Washington Nationals is unclear. The Royals will try to avoid a road sweep.
-
The Los Angeles Dodgers activated Tommy Edman ahead of last night’s 1-0 home win over the Tampa Bay Rays, but he didn’t play. However, Edman is set to be in tonight’s lineup, with Shohei Ohtani on the mound but getting the night off from hitting.

June 16: Tuesday’s news to know
Trea Turner of the Phillies is hitting just .189 in the month of June. Mitchell Leff/Getty ImagesBy Todd ZolaTuesday’s full slate gets going at 6:40 p.m. ET with an NL East affair featuring the Miami Marlins visiting the Philadelphia Phillies. Rain could be an issue in two games: the Cincinnati Reds hosting the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves entertaining the San Francisco Giants.
-
Trea Turner‘s availability for tonight’s opener is uncertain after he was hit on the right hand by a pitch last night and subsequently removed from the game. X-rays were negative, rendering his status as day-to-day. Edmundo Sosa shifted from third base to shortstop with Alec Bohm coming in to play third base. Bohm was initially going to get the day off. Sosa is the likely replacement if Turner has to miss more action.
-
Weather permitting, Kodai Senga is slated to come off the 15-day IL and take the hill for the Mets. He was scheduled for another rehab outing, but the club opted to activate him after placing Christian Scott on the 15-day IL due to a hip issue. Senga tossed 75 pitches over six frames in his last rehab effort, so he should be able to work with limited restrictions.
-
The Texas Rangers placed Corey Seager on the 7-day IL as he continues to experience concussion symptoms following a home plate collision last Thursday. Ezequiel Duran, Nicky Lopez and Josh Smith could all see action at shortstop. Smith was activated from the 10-day IL last night after recovering from glute and wrist injuries, as well as needing a hospital stay for viral meningitis.
-
The Detroit Tigers scratched Troy Melton from starting last night’s series opener with the Houston Astros. He was experiencing a tight lower back, resulting in Drew Anderson stepping in for a spot start and tossing 2 2/3 innings in what was essentially a bullpen game. The Tigers did end up winning 9-3. Melton’s next start is up in the air, but they have some flexibility with both Casey Mize and Justin Verlander due back this week, along with an off day on Thursday.
-
Gleyber Torres had to exit last night’s game in the second inning after hurting his side during an at-bat. The Tigers replaced him with Hao-Yu Lee, who finished the night 2-for-4. Torres returned from a left oblique strain on June 1 and has hit .341/.413/.585 this month. Lee, Colt Keith, and Jahmai Jones will help cover the keystone if Torres needs to return to the IL.
-
The Astros’ battery for the Tigers matchup is slated to be Hunter Brown on the mound with Yainer Diaz behind the plate. Both are expected to be activated from the IL before the contest. Brown has been sidelined with a Grade 2 shoulder strain after last appearing on March 31. The right-hander built up to 75 pitches in his fourth and final rehab start, so he should be able to extend to 80-85 pitches in his return. Diaz has been shelved since May 4 due to a left oblique strain.
-
The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to welcome back Tommy Edman, as he’ll reportedly make his 2026 debut tonight at home against the Tampa Bay Rays. He completed his rehab after undergoing offseason right ankle surgery. Edman is expected to be eased into action with multiple off days per week before eventually taking over at the keystone full time.
-
The San Diego Padres placed closer Mason Miller on the bereavement list yesterday, so he’ll be out until at least tomorrow and possibly through Sunday. Jason Adam will likely handle save chances, though he wasn’t needed last night as the Padres were blanked 3-0 with Dustin May completing a one-hit shutout for the St. Louis Cardinals.
