Three wickets in six balls – Tongue’s terrific spell after lunch

Pakistan

Azan Awais: Hard to give much more after a first-ball duck and a 14-ball nine. Facing Robinson in these conditions was a tough first exposure to Test cricket in England. 2

Imam-ul-Haq: Lined up OK in the first innings while making 42 until a loose drive opened the door and began a collapse from 97-2 to 171 all out. 4

Shan Masood: Possibly generous after scores of five and 29. 4

Abdullah Shafique: The only Pakistan batter to reach fifty or emerge with any crumb of credit after 61 in the first innings. 6

Saud Shakeel: Averages 50 at home and 30 away. Not ideal. His second-innings dismissal, flicking to backward square leg as he lost his balance, was as tame as they come. 3

Salman Agha: A return of 25 runs from his two innings and he did not bowl. Also failed to inspire his players in the field while standing in as captain. If he was not vice-captain he would surely be certain to be replaced if Babar Azam is fit again for Lord’s. 3

Muhammad Rizwan: Showed some fight in making 41 in Pakistan’s second innings but should have at least tried standing up to the stumps to Muhammad Ali when Brook was batting. 4

Ali Usman: Pakistan’s spinner bowled some good balls in taking 5-95 – his first Test five-for in his third Test. He also bowled far too many down the leg side. A real mixed bag. 5

Khurram Shahzad: While it is a low bar, he was the pick of Pakistan’s seamers. His three wickets cost 133 runs at more than six runs per over. 4

Muhammad Abbas: Could have and should have been a handful in the conditions but was disappointing. 4

Mohammad Ali: It is not his fault Pakistan picked an attack with so little pace. Ubaid Shah, Naseem Shah’s younger brother, should come in next week. 3
