Seattle Seahawks rookie safety Bud Clark broke his right ankle in Sunday night’s 19-16 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans and will be out for “multiple months,” coach Mike Macdonald told reporters after the game.
Clark was carted off the field after suffering the injury at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Seattle’s second-round pick went down on the first defensive play. He was helped onto the injury cart after an air cast was placed on his right leg.
Macdonald mentioned backup offensive lineman Mason Richman also suffered what the team believes to be a major, long-term injury. Richman, a second-year player who started at left guard, went down on the opening drive and walked off the field under his own power.
“Two guys that we love, that play our style of ball, that are our types of guys, teammates love them, great teammates, great guys, great football players, they have great futures,” Macdonald mentioned. “It’s a heartbreaker, honestly. We had three heartbreakers this week, which is tough.”

The Seahawks also lost wide receiver Jake Bobo to a season-ending knee injury during a joint practice with the Titans on Friday.
Clark, drafted 64th overall, has mostly worked with the Seahawks’ second-team defense this summer but got the start Sunday as Macdonald rested all of Seattle’s usual starters on both sides of the ball.
The team had been hopeful that Clark could start to push Ty Okada for the starting job opposite Julian Love.
The Seahawks are now dealing with multiple injury situations at safety. After Nick Emmanwori had ankle surgery in July, the team was confident he’d return before their Sept. 9 opener against the New England Patriots. But that is now uncertain, as Emmanwori is off the physically unable to perform list but has yet to begin practicing.
A source told ESPN that another safety, Rodney Thomas II, had surgery this week to repair a fracture in his right hand. Thomas, who’s fighting for a roster spot, did not play Sunday but has a chance to play in Seattle’s preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Non-starters who didn’t play Sunday due to injuries included running back Emanuel Wilson, wide receiver Tory Horton and cornerback Julian Neal. Cornerback Trevon Diggs, signed last week, also did not play.
