Serena and Venus Williams have received a wild card to play doubles at the US Open, the tournament declared Wednesday.

The sisters, who have won 14 major doubles titles together, made their return as a duo last week at the Cincinnati Open after a nearly four-year absence. This will mark their ninth joint appearance in the doubles draw at the US Open and their first since 2022. They won the title in New York in 1999 and 2009.

Serena Williams, 44, returned to competitive tennis in June after “evolving away” from the sport following the 2022 US Open. She and Venus, 46, were originally slated to play together at Wimbledon in July before withdrawing when Serena injured her knee in her first-round singles match at the All England Club.

Serena, Alcaraz out in mixed doubles at US Open

Serena will be playing only doubles at the US Open. She made a quarterfinal run in the mixed doubles alongside Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday before the pair was eliminated by Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli. Venus received a wild card to play in the singles draw.

The main draw gets underway Sunday, with the doubles draw beginning later in the week.
