Friday night’s NHL action saw all three home underdogs pull out key wins to take 2-1 series leads over perennial favorites, which shook up the Stanley Cup winner odds board. First, the Montreal Canadiens won an overtime thriller against the Tampa Bay Lightning, shortening the Habs from 35-1 to 18-1 and lengthening the Bolts from +650 to +950. Tampa Bay had come into the playoffs at +500 — third on the odds board — to lift the Cup.

  • Next, the Utah Mammoth handled the Vegas Golden Knights for a second straight game, improving their championship odds from 30-1 to 22-1. VGK is all the way out to 14-1 after coming into the postseason with fourth-best 10-1 odds. Finally, the Edmonton Oilers, who were Stanley Cup runners-up in the last two seasons, experienced the biggest upset of the night by falling to the upstart Anaheim Ducks — again. Connor McDavid and company are now 19-1 for the title and +120 for the series after coming in as approximately -235 favorites; Anaheim remains a relative long shot for the Cup at 45-1.

This is all to say that the Colorado Avalanche (+230) and Carolina Hurricanes (+285) very much look like the favorites, as both teams are out to 3-0 series leads and have opened up a large gap between themselves and the next closest team (the Dallas Stars, at +900). None of these teams are particularly large sportsbook liabilities, but one that is would be the Buffalo Sabres, who are down to fifth-best 11-1 odds for the Stanley Cup after taking a 2-1 series lead against the Boston Bruins (80-1).
