A competitor killed in a crash during a qualifying session for the Isle of Man TT races suffered chest injuries, an inquest has heard.

Daniel Ingham, from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, died after crashing at Doran’s Bend, between Ballig and Glen Helen, on the western section of the course on the opening lap of the evening session on 27 May.

The hearing at Douglas Courthouse was told that preparations had been made to airlift the 33-year-old to hospital before he died.

Adjourning the inquest, coroner James Brooks passed on his condolences to Ingham’s family and friends.

Representing the Isle of Man TT race organisers, the Auto Cycle Union, advocate Darren Taubitz also passed on condolences.

In a previous statement at the time, announcing his death, TT organisers reported he was a “popular and well-respected member of the road racing community”.

“Daniel’s passion for the sport was evident to all that knew him,” they added.

The 33-year-old was a newcomer at the Isle of Man TT, but had significant experience racing on the 37.7-mile (60km) Mountain Course.

Making his debut in the Manx Grand Prix (MGP) in 2016, he made several podium finishes at the event before taking victory in the senior race in 2024.

MGP organisers, the Manx Motor Cycle Club, previously reported he had “earned enormous respect throughout the paddock for his determination, professionalism and love of road racing”.

“Dan was admired not only for his talent on track, but also for the person he was away from racing, friendly, humble and deeply respected by competitors, officials, marshals and supporters alike,” they added.

Ingham’s wife, Helayna, has called for those who knew him to send their memories and photographs to the family to be included in a memory book for their children.

She reported he was the “best dad in the world” and “always had a big smile on his face”, adding that the family were “lost without him”.
