Slide 1 of 5, Tour de France stage one goes past Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, Barcelona’s iconic Sagrada Familia was a backdrop for the opening stage

Second place belies disastrous opener for Netcompany Ineos

Complete with a new image and big injection of cash, British ‘super team’ Netcompany Ineos had a nightmare opening stage.

Even before the race, they lost their British hope for overall yellow jersey success in Oscar Onley following a crash in a warm-up race.

Then, after setting the fastest time at the second time check, with a team which included the phenomenally fast Italian Filippo Ganna, the team’s bet for yellow, France’s Kevin Vauquelin suffered a rear-wheel puncture meaning there was no way he could keep up with the rest of the chain of riders, losing more than a minute overall.

Soon after, the team’s other hope for GC contention, 2019 winner Egan Bernal of Colombia, lost touch seemingly through over-reaching earlier in the stage.

Bernal has spent years rehabilitating following a life-threatening crash during training in 2022.

Ganna did set the fastest time despite the losses, after the team quickly reprioritised him on the road, but he eventually ceded to Vingegaard.

The team who won seven Tours de France as Team Sky and Ineos between 2012 and 2019 will likely now chase single stage wins which, while not unexpected, they would not have considered after just one stage.
