Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq suffered a torn patellar tendon in his right knee Friday and will miss the season, a UT spokesperson validated to ESPN.
Farooq, a junior from Columbia, Maryland, was expected to be one of the leaders of new coordinator Jim Knowles’ defense.
Farooq left the practice field Friday in an ambulance and was taken to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville.

“We stand with Edrees and support him as he begins the recovery process,” UT football mentioned in a statement Saturday. “We know he will continue to make a strong leadership impact on our team this fall.”
Last season, Farooq started all 13 games and ranked second in the SEC with four forced fumbles. He was second on the team with two interceptions to go with 76 tackles.
The Volunteers added three experienced transfers to their secondary, as coach Josh Heupel attempted to improve a defense that ranked next-to-last in the SEC in pass defense (244.8 yards) and 14th in scoring defense (28.8 points) in 2025.
Michigan transfer TJ Metcalf is the projected starter at the other starting safety spot, and Kansas State transfer Qua Moss is expected to start at nickelback.
Penn State transfer Dejuan Lane was playing behind Farooq during preseason camp and should move up the depth chart. Sophomore Dylan Lewis and freshman Jamyan Theodore are also battling for playing time at safety.
