With only one of the 1-seeds in play on Friday – a 42-point victory for Texas (+700) – there wasn’t a clear opportunity to evaluate the favorites in the women’s NCAA tournament and, thus, no movement to speak of on the national championship odds board. That changes Saturday when UConn (-265), UCLA (+550) and South Carolina (+800) all get their first tastes of tournament action.
Those three teams – in addition to 2-seed LSU (16-1), who covered a 52.5-point spread on Friday – all show favorite spreads of over 50 points for their first-round games, the most in a tournament round since at least 2021, according to ESPN Research. It has the sportsbooks bracing themselves for chalk, in the early-goings and beyond, as the women’s championship marches on.
Bookmakers note that the top five teams are virtually the only ones receiving any kind of significant action from the betting public, though Caesars college basketball trader Patrick Berbert notes some fliers at Vanderbilt given the long odds as a 2-seed. Many bettors grabbed UConn while they still had plus-odds earlier in the campaign, while others gravitated to UCLA late with the thought that they are the only other team that can reasonably win it all.
